The title of this work references horseshoe crabs, a creature that evolved to its current state 200 million years ago. Horseshoe crabs have striking blue blood which is an invaluable resource to the pharmaceutical industry and one of the most expensive liquids on the planet. Due to its unique ability to identify and isolate bacteria, the blood has been used to insure the purity and safety of every vaccine, its use in the medical industry has led to a declining horseshoe crab population and designation as a “near threatened species”. This artwork was created in the wake of the 2020 covid pandemic with a somber curiosity for some of the costs of human longevity.
